GAA retain Guinness sponsorship despite calls for ban

Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) president, Nicky Brennan, has said that it is the role of the Irish government and other agencies – not the GAA – to take responsibility for the issue of alcohol-related sports sponsorships.

The controversial remarks come after the GAA launched its National Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention Programme (ASAP) yesterday, but retained Irish brewer Guinness as one of the hurling championship’s sponsors.

Brennan said: “The situation is that we have taken away the Guinness sponsorship from the main title of the championship. We have a two-year deal and the matter is being reviewed on an annual basis. Whether it goes forward after this I am not 100 per cent sure”.

Four years ago, a GAA committee recommended that drinks sponsorships be phased out, while the practice of club sides being sponsored by local bars and drinks companies was also questioned.
