Two bids were submitted for the World Athletics Final. The Greek port city beat Bydgoszcz in Poland, which will now bid alongside Morocco to organise the final in 2010.
The winning bid was presented by the general secretary for Sport of the Greek Government, Stavros Douvis, supported by a delegation which included the president of SEGAS, the Greek Athletics Federation, Vasilios Sevastis.
Meeanwhile, Birmingham will host the Half-Marathon on October 11, 2009. The successful bid was made jointly by UK Athletics and Birmingham City Council during a presentation to IAAF Council, led by Ed Warner, chairman of UKA, and Denis Hurst, interim assistant director of Sport at Birmingham City Council.
