Advertising revenue for CBS basketball coverage soars

Coverage of the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship is expected to generate $450 million in advertising revenue for American network CBS.

The broadcaster has sold 95 per cent of its advertising space for the telecasts, which begin on March 20. New advertisers include Chevron, Liberty Mutual and Starwood Hotels.

Executive vice-president, sales and marketing for CBS Sports, John Bogusz, said that the network is already well ahead of last year's sell-out levels. He added that although there are “scattered units available for each telecast throughout the tournament,” including the Final Four and Championship games, interested advertisers will have to buy packages across all the games.

The cost of a 30-second advertising spot in the Championship Game is around $1.4 million.
