Ecclestone dismisses Australian GP proposals

Formula One boss, Bernie Ecclestone, dismissed proposals by Australian Grand Prix organisers to push back the start the race at 1700 local time (0600 GMT).

The suggestion was made by organisers in a bid to keep the race in the calendar beyond 2010. Ecclestone, however, told Australia's The Age newspaper that "It would be nice if the race was on at midday or 2pm for European audiences but I guess that would mean it starting in the middle of the night in Australia”.

Organisers have already pushed back the start of Sunday's season-opening grand prix in Melbourne from 1400 local (0300 GMT) to 1530 (0430 GMT). Singapore will make its debut this season as the sport's first night race, but Victoria state authorities have ruled out going down that route when the current contract expires in 2010.
