Birmingham has already hosted the 2003 World Indoor Championships, last year's European Indoor Championships and is due to be the base for the US track and field team in 2012.
Birmingham spokesman Denis Hurst said: “it would be a tremendous thing if we got it, we have a really good history of hosting athletics championships and this year we have the UK trials for the Olympics back in Birmingham”.
The bid will be presented to the International Association of Athletics Federations' in April. No other candidates have yet been revealed.
