Australia considers changes to anti-siphoning law

The Australian government is considering making changes to the laws that protect big-ticket sporting events for free-to-air coverage in a bid to drive the take-up of free-to-air digital channels.

It is considering allowing TV networks to show certain sporting events, presently on the anti-siphoning list, to be shown on new free-to-air digital channels.

The changes are being considered by the country’s Communications Minister Stephen Conroy and sports thought most likely to be looked at include soccer, tennis and netball.

Australia’s analogue channels are due to be switched off in 2013, and the Government is looking for ways to encourage Australians to take up digital TV. At present only 30 per cent nationally have so far made the switch.
