Putin calls for Sochi 2014 legacy

Russian President Vladimir Putin said preparations for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic games were one element in the government plan to promote sport and fitness for ordinary people.

Addressing members of his advisory sports and olympic council in Sochi, Putin urged those involved to make a success of hosting the Games in 2014. "Our task is to build sports venues of a new generation, which will be competitive in decades to come.”

"About a million participants and guests will attend the games and we need to provide them with comfort, security, fast communications and other services on levels higher than the existing international standards," Putin said.

Putin also said organisers of the Sochi 2014 Olympics are moving towards the construction phase of preparations for the Games.
