Madrid 2016 launches new Sports Day to celebrate sport in the city

Madrid 2016 launched a new city-wide Madrid Sports Day, which will take place every second Sunday of June from this year onwards as part of the city’s commitment to hosting the 2016 Olympic Games.

The Sports Day will be a joint venture between the city council and the Madrid 2016 Olympic bid team and aims to build on public enthusiasm and demonstrate to the people of Spain that sports can be available and relevant to everyone.

Mercedes Coghen, leader of the Madrid 2016 Olympic bid launched the event which the bid hopes will inspire the citizens of Madrid and encourage them to experience the Olympic spirit through different elements of sport. The whole city will have the opportunity to take part in a range of different Olympic and Paralympic sports during this time. The new sports day will showcase many traditional sports as well as some new and more radical games of potential future Olympics, which will appeal to the younger generations.

The Madrid bid says it has the support of 86.7 per cent of the city population for the Madrid 2016 Olympic bid.

Coghen also announced that the Madrid 2016 bid would appoint three commissions – a Sports Commission, Media Commission and Paralympic Commission - which will all be headed up by leading experts.

Plans to rejuvenate and extend local facilities including those to connect the Olympic Stadium with the Village were also announced. “This Olympic Village will try to become the emblem of the Madrid 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, thanks to the creative contribution of some of Spain’s leading architects,” said Coghen.
