Moscow to establish foundation for youth sports

Moscow’s Sports Department will establish a dedicated foundation for youth sports support which it hopes could be turned into a valuable tool for the IOC in promoting youth sports.

“Our bid to host the 2010 Youth Olympic Games is just a first step in Moscow’s campaign to support youth sports worldwide”, Moscow Mayor and the bid’s Chairman Mr. Victor Luzhkov said, following the corner stone laying ceremony for the new hockey field in Moscow.

“The IOC’s initiative to introduce the Youth Olympic Games is a great and much needed idea. What we are suggesting is to complement this initiative with a specially designed concept that will bring the world’s leading cities, such as Moscow, in youth sports development in order to help poor nations and promote youth sports with finance, expertise and equipment. The programme’s target regions are mainly in Africa, South America and Asia. There is a tremendous human potential here which needs to be boosted”, Mayor Luzhkov added.

Once the foundation’s concept is finalised, Mayor Luzhkov will discuss it with the Mayors of Madrid, Paris, Rome, Berlin, London, Tokyo and New York. “Once we get the other cities’ support in this project, we will discuss with the IOC and offer the foundation as one of the global youth sports development vehicles,” Mayor Luzhkov said.
