Key TV deals for Commonwealth Games

The Fast Track agency has agreed exclusive TV deals for the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games in Australia and New Zealand.

Fast Track’s Richard Russell and Edward Leask successfully lead negotiations with Network Ten and Foxtel in Australia, and TVNZ in New Zealand.

Mr Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman of the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, said: “The rights for the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, which are represented by Fast Track, were keenly sought by a number of parties, but the TEN and FOXTEL partnership was compelling and will deliver the most comprehensive coverage ever for Australian audiences in the 80-year history of the Games.”

Russell, Fast Track’s Director of Television, said: “The fact that Australian athletes win more gold medals than any other nation makes the Commonwealth Games a highly attractive proposition for its domestic broadcasters. Of additional appeal to major broadcasters this time is the decision by the Delhi 2010 Organising Committee to originate, for the very first time, all coverage in High Definition. TVNZ’s decision to secure the rights in New Zealand is a clear demonstration by the broadcaster of the increasing appeal of the Commonwealth Games and its desire to maintain its 100% record of having transmitted every Commonwealth Games since television coverage became available.”

In Australia, the free-to-air service of Network TEN and PayTV’s FOXTEL will provide viewers with the most comprehensive and complementary coverage ever seen of the multi-sport event while in New Zealand, TVNZ will continue its 40-year tradition of carrying the Commonwealth Games.
