Ten and Foxtel win 2010 Commonwealth Games rights

Australian Commercial broadcaster Ten and Pay-TV group Foxtel acquired the Australian TV rights for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.

Under the agreement Ten and Foxtel will share the live broadcast rights, except for the opening and closing ceremonies, which Ten will show exclusively.

Ten and Foxtel will also look to on-sell the radio rights. Foxtel has secured the subscription television and new media rights, including mobile, internet and handheld digital video broadcast.

Ten Network chief executive Grant Blackley said financial terms were confidential but that the network doesn’t "do sports deals unless they make sound commercial sense - this one does.

“We did pay a realistic rights fee that will be offset through the onselling of subscription rights...we expect this will be a highly profitable event for us from every aspect," he said.

Foxtel chief executive Kim Williams said he expected record viewing numbers, given the extensive coverage and new technology such as high-definition television. "This event will work well for us, both in terms of driving subscription and driving profitability," he said.

The Commonwealth Games will run from October 3 to October 14 in 2010.
