Last week local officials committed to spending $50 million on a 25,000-seat soccer stadium that would be built adjacent to a new ballpark proposed for the Florida Marlins.
The two-stadium $2 billion package located at the Orange Bowl site is part of a public works project envisioned by Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and must also be approved by Miami-Dade County commissioners on Tuesday.
Once approval is signed-off, the onus will be on a prospective owner to invest a further $50m into the stadium. "Multiple groups are interested," MLS spokesman Dan Courtemanche said. "After this, there might be more [who are interested]."
Mayor Diaz and MLS Commissioner Don Garber have had ongoing discussions about fielding a team in Miami almost since the Miami Fusion folded in 2001.
