The event will now include a sprint race on turf over over 6 furlongs, a new mile race for two-year-old fillies and a mile and a half dirt race – the longest of the meeting – called the Marathon.
Each of the turf events will award prize money of $1million, while the Marathon winner will earn roughly half that.
This is the second three-race expansion in as many years for the Breeders' Cup which sees a total of $25.5million up for grabs over the two day meeting at Santa Anita next October.
Greg Avioli, president of the organising body said “This continues our aggressive expansion of the Breeders' Cup World Championships as a pre-eminent international sports and entertainment property for our fans, sponsors and television viewers around the globe”.
