Acer becomes IOC TOP Sponsor for 2009-2012

Taiwanese computer maker Acer Inc signed a deal with the International Olympic Committee to become a worldwide Olympic sponsor.

The sponsorship will run from January 2009 to 2012 and covers the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games and the 2012 London Olympic Games. Acer replaces Lenovo as a worldwide Olympic sponsor, just days after the Beijing-based company said it would end its deal after the Beijing Olympics.

Acer declined to say how much it paid for the rights, but media reports put the value of the deal at around $80 million. Acer Chairman J.T. Wang said "The careful choice of associating our company with established world leaders in their respective sectors has helped grow the brand perception of Acer around the world".

Acer estimates that its association with the London games will generate revenues of between $30 billion and $40 billion in 2012.
