Sixty-two per cent of population support Tokyo 2016

The Tokyo 2016 Olympic Games Bid Committee said 62 per cent of people surveyed in an opinion poll answered that they support the city’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

Twenty-six per cent responded that they are against the bid while 12 per cent answered that they neither support nor oppose it.

The survey was conducted via the internet from December 1 to December 3, targeting 3,000 individuals (1,000 residents of Tokyo, 2,000 residents outside Tokyo), aged 15 to 69.

Those supporting the bid responded with comments such as, "I want to watch the top-level performances of the world's finest athletes from up close," and, "I'm looking forward to seeing the success of the Japanese athletes in 2016 in Tokyo.”

Tokyo 2016 is preparing its International Olympic Committee (IOC) questionnaire to be submitted to the IOC by January 14. The IOC will announce the shortlist of 2016 Candidate Cities in June 2008 and will vote on the host city for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games at the IOC Session in Copenhagen in October 2009.
