The London Marathon is seeking a new principal sponsor after Flora said it would end its association with the world's most popular road race in 2009 after fourteen years.

Paul Nevett, UK’s Marketing Director for Unilever, the consumer products company that owns Flora said: “To say we have been delighted with the value this high profile and unique sponsorship opportunity has brought Flora over the years, would not do the partnership justice. To hold an association with a world class event such as this, for this long, has been a tremendously exciting and rewarding experience.

"We will of course continue to provide full and committed support to the event through till 2009, but beyond this, we have decided to seek other ways in which to challenge public perception about heart health and the need to reduce saturated fat, like butter in their diet. A key challenge for the brand.”

Dave Bedford, who organises the event, said: "This has been one of the most successful partnerships of sport and sponsorship...We'll now start our search for a worthy replacement title sponsor for the 2010 London Marathon."
