G-14 welcomes UEFA Champions League u-turn

The head of the G-14 group of Europe’s most powerful football clubs has welcomed UEFA's u-turn on proposals to revise the qualification route for the Champions League.

G-14 General Manager Thomas Kurth said that the decision by UEFA's Executive Committee has shown UEFA’s ‘ willingness to listen to the clubs and leagues’.

“Although UEFA's reform proposals were launched without prior consultation, G-14's clubs have nevertheless sought to make a constructive response, with our prime concern being to ensure that the quality of the Champions League competition remains at the highest level," Kurth said.

“With [the] modification of UEFA's original proposal, we believe that a compromise has been found which will be of benefit to all stakeholders in the European football family and that the Champions League will remain the world's leading competition for clubs."

UEFA's initial proposal was to allow access to the Champions League for a number of domestic cup winners and to change the qualification route for teams having to play qualifying round matches.

Following consultations, UEFA's Executive Committee has now agreed to drop the proposed access to the Champions League for domestic cup winners.

There will also be a 'better balance' between ensuring the quality of the competition and offering more national league champions an appropriate chance to qualify for the Champions League's group stage, G-14 said.
