Premiere scraps 2008 outlook over Bundesliga TV rights

German pay TV broadcaster Premiere scrapped its 2008 outlook over uncertainty over the forthcoming TV rights sales process for German football’s Bundesliga – the German pay-TV market’s killer-application.

"The bidding process will begin much later than expected and an agency has been commissioned to manage the process. We cannot rule out that this new development could impact potential and existing subscriber behaviour," Premiere said.

Premiere said only it expects a continued positive business development for 2008 and will publish an update on February 14 when it reports 2007 figures.

Premiere was targeting 4.75 million subscribers by end 2008 and a core profit of over E1.2 billion. But in October German media mogul Leo Kirch agreed a deal for his Sirius agency to market the domestic TV rights for German football’s Bundesliga from 2009-10 and Premiere will have to bid for the rights at what could be a much higher price than it is currently paying.
