The city’s planning committee unanimously approved the club’s designs for a 60,000 capacity ground in Stanley Park, which had been re-designed by the new American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.
When completed the stadium will hold 15,000 more fans than Anfield, but crucially, the designs allow for an increase to 75,000 in the future.
The new stadium will house 114 executive boxes, twice the number in the original design, and is expected to be finished by August 2011.
