Demolition time for Tigers Stadium

Lobby groups have until next Monday to prevent the city of Detroit handing authority of the 95-year-old Tigers Stadium over to the city's Economic Development Corp for demolition.

According to The Canadian Press, a demolition contract could be awarded this month with actual dismantling beginning as early as mid-November.

Detroit has spent $2.5 million in maintenance to Olympia Entertainment, owned by Tigers owner Mike Ilitch, on the stadium since Ilitch moved the Tigers to Comerica Park in 2000.

Fans will have the opportunity to bid for items from the historic stadium in a month-long online auction. The city will use proceeds from the auction to offset the costs of demolition.
