The Spanish bank will become the official sponsor beginning next year through 2012, CONMEBOL president Nicolas Leoz said. The tournament will officially be known as the Copa Santander Liberatadores.
“We are witnessing a significant event in the institutional history of the South American Confederation", said Leoz. "This sponsorship the executives from Santander pointed out has the objective of reinforcing the positioning and image of Santander Bank in Latin America.
“This objective is framed inside our Image Plan for 2007-2010, which aims to place Santander at the top of the international financial sector, and to reinforce its positioning as a leading global bank".
Toyota has been the title sponsor of the tournament since 1998.
