Earlier this week the Russian Olympic Committee, the Federal Agency for Physical Culture and Sports and the Administration of the City of Sochi officially established the Sochi 2014 Olympic Organising Committee (SOOC). Chernyshenko was appointed to lead the committee while another key figure from the bid campaign, Alexander Zhukov, was appointed Chair of the Organising Committee’s Supervisory Board.
Chernyshenko said that one of his first tasks as CEO would be to appoint a team of experts to the organising committee. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me as a manager to put in place the best possible team, to build the structure that will ensure we deliver a historical legacy for Sochi and for Russia.”
“Many of the team that worked on the Sochi 2014 bid will be appointed to the organising committee as they meet the criteria of excellence in their particular areas of expertise. Winning the bid for Sochi was a real team effort and delivering the Games will be the same.”
Chernyshenko said that IOC President Jacque Rogge had been impressed on his visit to the city last week. Work on 11 of the 13 competition venues is set to start very soon.
“We want, once again, to thank the IOC members and international federations for their belief in our bid and our city and we promise that we will not let them down. We will put the right team in place to plan and run an exceptional Winter Olympic Games.”
