Austrian broadcaster ORF to screen European Cup

Austrian public broadcaster ORF has secured the rights to broadcast all 31 matches for next year’s EURO 2008.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed, but industry observers believe ORF paid more than €10m for the package, according to Austrian press reports.

The bidding process has been difficult as UEFA expected had expected to sell the rights for around €18 million. This target became unlikely after Swiss public broadcaster SRG SSR apparently paid only €6.8m.

Possible competitor, commercial Austrian broadcaster ATV did not to take part in the tender allowing ORF to secure the rights for much less than UEFA’s initial expectations.

The deal also includes radio, mobile TV and internet streaming rights.
