London 2012 could boost UK tourism to the tune of £3bn

The UK's tourist industry could be given a £3 billion boost by the London 2012 Olympic Games, according to a new report from hotel chain Travelodge.

The UK could outperform global tourism growth by 50 per cent in the four years before and after the 2012 Olympic Games, according to the report, with a potential extra 6.6 million visitors to the country between 2007 and 2016, generating the extra revenue.

But the report stresses that the boost is not guaranteed and will require significant additional Government funding for tourism if they are to be achieved.

Travelodge reviewed tourism data from previous Olympic host cities including the most recent Summer Olympic hosts, Athens 2004.
