RUSSIA TO LAUNCH SPORTS CHANNEL

Tenders have been submitted for a new Russian general access sports channel, proposed by President Vladimir Putin as a way to promote healthy lifestyles in Russia.

The winning bidder for the sports channel will be given access to a 'sport broadcasting' frequency pool in 68 Russian cities.

One of the applications was submitted by 7TV, 50 per cent of which belongs to metals magnate Alisher Usmanov, whose company Metalloinvest is capitalised at around $15 billion.

7TV is widely expected to provide the foundation for the new channel.

All tenders must be submitted by August 29.
