CYCLING'S DISCOVERY TEAM TO DISBAND WITHOUT BACKER

Lance Armstrong's former cycling team Discovery will disband at the end of the season after failing to find a new sponsor.

Discovery Channel had already said earlier this year that it would not renew its sponsorship when it expired at the end of the year. But the team manager, Johan Bruyneel, said the team had failed to secure another backer.

"I had contacts with candidate sponsors but the situation in the sport is so bad that nobody wants to be involved with us," said manager Johan Bruyneel.

Armstrong won a record seven Tours de France with the team, formed as US Postal Service in 1996.
