THAI AUTHORITIES CALL FOR ASSET FREEZE OVER MANCHESTER CITY DEAL

Thailand’s Asset Examination Committee which ordered the former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s domestic assets to be frozen has now said the money he used to acquire English Premier League club Manchester City may have been hidden from the government.

According to press reports, the AEC said the money used to acquire the club was never mentioned in the asset declarations all Thai politicians have to make.

"The former prime minister has abused his power by concealing his shares and converting them into cash," a committee member Kaewsun Atibhodhi told a news conference.

The AEC said it would therefore seek additional measures to freeze more of his assets both domestically and overseas, although it is unclear how or if it will be able to identify or freeze Shinawatra’s overseas assets.
