ARSENAL BOARD WARNS OVER TAKEOVER BIDS

English Premier League club Arsenal issued a warning over buyers as speculation increased that US businessman Stan Kroenke may make a bid to increase his stake in the club. Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has also refused to rule out a takeover of Arsenal.

Arsenal managing director Keith Edelman claimed that any potential investor may try to take more money out of the club than they would put in and reiterated the board's opposition to such a move. He told Arsenal's website: "Anybody who invests in a club, particularly from overseas, will want financial returns. "Some other clubs with billionaire owners, their debts are mounting up."

Kroenke presently owns just over 12 per cent of the club's parent company. Edelman said, “I just want to make sure that fans really do understand that if a billionaire buys any club in the country, it doesn't automatically mean that they're going to have success or be able to invest further sums in the squads.

Ecclestone may be interested in the club, but has not yet spoken to anyone at the club. He said: "If somebody offers me something I think is good value, I will have a go. I'm interested in anything if it's cheap enough."
