SKY SPORTS STRIKES BACK IN UK TV GOLF BATTLE

Sky Sports has won the exclusive UK rights to screen the Ryder Cup in 2010 and 2012 and extended its coverage of the PGA European Tour for a further four years as the battle for the subscription fees of the UK’s golf fans takes another turn.

The UK marketplace has become more competitive since the launch of Setanta’s highly publicised Golf Channel with extensive coverage from the USA.

Now Sky has struck back with a deal which underscores its relationship with the Ryder Cup which has become one of world sport’s marquee events.

The new deal also includes live coverage on Sky Sports of The Barclays Scottish Open, BMW PGA Championship, Quinn Direct British Masters at The de Vere Belfry, and The HSBC World Matchplay from Wentworth in partnership with The BBC.

Sky will also screen the US Open until 2008 and the US PGA Championship until 2010 as well all three World Golf Championship events, The Solheim Cup, and events from The Champions Tour, The LPGA Tour, and Amateur Tours.

Vic Wakeling, Managing Director of Sky Sports, said: "We have a marvelous relationship with the European Tour and are delighted it will continue for at least another four years.

"The European Tour has grown so much over the last decade whilst the incredible growth of the Ryder Cup has made it one of sport’s biggest success stories.
