It has confirmed it is to test the Hawk-Eye system – already extensively used in tennis and cricket – with successful trials likely to see it ushered in as an official tool of match officials.
Paul Hawkins, who developed Hawk-Eye, told the BBC: “We have a contract with the Premier League to develop a system. It is purely for the referees and not for television.
“The process is to be evaluated firstly by the Premier League and then FIFA.”
