BARCLAYS REWARDED FOR SPORT AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Barclays won two awards at the Business in the Community (BITC) Awards of Excellence, winning the EDF Environmental Leadership Award and the BUPA Healthy Community Award. The Healthy Community Award recognised the success of the Barclays Spaces for Sports programme.

The Barclays Spaces for Sports programme is the groundbreaking £30 million partnership between Barclays, the Football Foundation and Groundwork to create sustainable sports sites in areas where such facilities are lacking. Through Barclays Spaces for Sports, land equivalent to 160 football pitches has been regenerated to date.

Alastair Camp, Corporate Responsibility Director at Barclays, said: “We were delighted to receive these two awards recognising our commitment to working across our business to contribute to some important environmental and social challenges.”

Barclays Spaces for Sports has already delivered more than 150 sites and awarded more than 3,450 coaching packs, benefiting more than 420,000 disadvantaged people across the UK.

"Barclays Spaces for Sports is a stunning example of a big business taking on a big community issue and delivering big impacts,” said Bob Watston, HR Director at BUPA and chair of the judging panel.

“Targeted at Britain’s poorest communities we were impressed by the scale of impact and moved by the stories of how lives of individuals, families and even whole communities have been improved through this inspirational programme.”
