WIMBLEDON TV FEES COULD BE SET TO RISE

UK public-service broadcaster the BBC could be forced to pay a much higher price to secure a new TV rights deal for Wimbledon.

According to English press reports there is belief within the Lawn Tennis Association, governing body for the game of tennis in Great Britain, that the BBC’s current £50 million four-year deal, does not reflect the true value of the event.

The tournament’s status as a “listed event”, where only free-to-air broadcasters can purchase the rights may change after the current deal ends in 2009.

An early bid from the BBC could be the only way to prevent prices soaring in the competitive UK market. A BBC spokeswoman said: "It is a challenge we consider a very distant prospect."
