R&A INCREASE PRIZE FUND FOR THE OPEN

Organisers of The Open say the winner of golf’s major will pocket an increased prize cheque of £750,000.

The figure represents a rise of £30,000 from last year and helps push the prize fund up £200,000 on 2006 to £4.2m. Prizes distributed across the field rise by an average of five percent.

The tournament is staged at Carnoustie in Scotland between July 19-22.

Peter Dawson, chief executive of The R&A, said: "Equating to US$8.4 million, this increased prize money reflects our goal of maintaining the position of The Open Championship at the forefront of world golf."
