WESTERN PROVINCE CONSIDERS NEW STADIUM

South Africa’s Western Province Rugby Union is looking to move rugby out of its traditional home at Newlands to Cape Town’s new Green Point Stadium after
the 2010 World Cup.

Western Province Rugby Football Union chief executive Theuns Roodman
revealed that the union was interested in bidding to become the
operator of the Green Point Stadium.
"The new stadium is a multi-purpose design that will accommodate soccer, rugby and concerts and other events," said Robert Hormes, the architect who designed the stadium. “The only thing that Newlands has is atmosphere. But it is an old stadium, the maintenance costs are higher and the line of sight towards the touchline is restricted for many fans sitting closest to that point of play."
Property experts estimate that if Newlands were zoned residential for townhouse development, a conservative estimate of the value of the site would be approximately R150-R200 million.
