SECOND NEW YORK MLS FRANCHISE COULD BE ON THE CARDS

The New York Mets and several groups of investors are said to have held discussions about obtaining the rights to operate a second Major League Soccer franchise in New York according to US media reports.

Neither the Mets nor MLS would comment on the story. The Mets said they were focused on their new stadium build at Citi Field, while the MLS said only that they had held talks with lots of different people.

The league’s original plan always was to have two teams in New York and having a second New York franchise would give it a cross town rivalry with the Red Bulls, who play at the Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. MLS plans to expand to 16 teams by 2010 or 2011.

Any investor is likely to have to pay about $30 million to run a team.
