SIX CITIES BID FOR FUTURE EUROPEAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

European Athletics announced that three applications have been received for both the European Athletics Indoor Championships 2011 and the SPAR European Cross Country Championships 2009.

The cities of Gothenburg, Sweden, Leipzig, Germany and Paris, France are bidding the host the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 2011 while Bydgoszcz, Poland, Carcassonne, France and Dublin, Ireland are vying for the right to host the European Cross Country Championships in 2009.

Commenting on the interest in hosting European Athletics Championships, Christian Milz, Director General of European Athletics said, "It is very encouraging for the value and brand of European Athletics to receive such high quality bids for our future events. All these cities have attended a Bidding seminar organised by European Athletics in Lausanne in March, so they know exactly what is required from our side, in order to continue to make the events a success."

"The Championships are the jewels in our crown and are a vital platform for European Athletics to communicate our messages and value around the continent, and in these six cities, we have the tradition, expertise and leadership to continue to raise the bar for our championships."

The relevant experts within the organisation will make the decision on the venues of these championships after a thorough examination of the bidding documents.

If and when a city passes this process, a site evaluation visit will then be carried out, led by European Athletics staff, along with a number of experts in the relevant areas of importance.

Only when a city has passed these two steps will they then be invited to make a presentation at the 118th European Athletics Council Meeting in Malta, on October 15, 2007. The winning cities will then be announced after the Council Meeting.
