IEC TO DISTRIBUTE TOP EUROPEAN ICE HOCKEY CLUB COMPETITION

The IEC in Sports agecny acquired the rights to distribute Ice Hockey’s European Champions Cup, in 2008.

The event will take place in St Petersburg, Russia, January 10-13, and will feature the national champions from the top six hockey nations in Europe. Currently the champions from Russia, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Finland, Slovakia and Switzerland are qualified and the teams will play a total of 7 matches over 4 days.

Pending the outcome of currently ongoing discussions between the IIHF and the NHL, the winner of the European Champions Cup will meet the NHL Stanley Cup champion to decide which club team is the best in the world.

The European Champions Cup was first played in 2005, as a replacement for the European Cup and the suspended European Hockey League. The stakes could not be higher with the “Super-Six” club teams playing for a record prize sum of 800 000 Swiss Francs.

“We are pleased to continue to build our presence in icehockey, which is of growing importance for us”, commented Jonas Persson, CEO IEC in Sports.
