AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT IN TALKS WITH CRICKET AUSTRALIA OVER ZIMBABWE TOUR

Australia could avoid paying compensation to the Zimbabwe Cricket Union if the Australian federal government bans the Australian team from touring there later this year.

Under ICC rules, Cricket Australia would be liable to a fine of $US2 million plus further compensation to Zimbabwe for lost revenue from TV rights and ticket sales if it cancels the tour. But the ICC said that Australia would be exempt from making the payment if the government bans the team from going.

It is unclear whether the government has the power to ban the tour in September but ministers will meet with Cricket Australia to discuss the series of three one-day matches.
