NEW DELHI GETS ROGGE SUPPORT FOR 2020 BID

IOC president Jacques Rogge has stoked the fire of ambition within Indian sport by suggesting New Delhi bid for the 2020 Olympic Games.

Rogge, during a visit to the country, said he was impressed by India Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s commitment to sporting investment and that the IOC would back its plans.

Rogge said: “New Delhi should bid for the 2020 Games. We have a lot of expectation for India and we in the IOC think India has great potential.

“You have a young population, good infrastructure and the benefit of past experiences in organising major events. You are also going to organise the 2010 Commonwealth Games and World Military Games and perhaps the hockey World Cup. All of which will make you a sporting tiger.”

The 2020 Games will be awarded to the successful bidder in 2013.

Indian sporting chiefs say they will start work on a bid once the 2010 Commonwealth Games have taken place.
