Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov, Sport Minister and double Olympic ice hockey champion Vyacheslav Fetisov, Sochi 2014 CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko and Russian IOC Member and four-time Olympic Champion Alexander Popov delivered an impassioned speech to SportAccord that highlighted the historic legacy of the Sochi 2014 Winter Games and the total commitment of the Federal Government to delivering the Games on time and on budget.
Deputy Prime Minister Zhukov emphasised the significance of the Sochi 2014 Winter Games for the revitalisation of Sochi and the legacy the Games would leave for the economy of this major region. Mr. Zhukov underscored that the Russian Government is totally committed to the Sochi 2014 Winter Games, which has been designated a national priority for Russia.
“President Putin and the Russian government have placed the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games at the heart of our existing programme to transform the Sochi region into a world class tourist and winter sport destination. This is our goal. This is a social and economic imperative for the Russian government.
Bid CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko led the presentation and outlined Sochi 2014’s plans demonstrating the technical excellence and innovation that will make Russia’s first-ever Winter Games unprecedented in the Olympic history.
“Our Games concept is clear: we aim to provide the entire Olympic Family with 21st century, purpose-built facilities that form a unique, compact and sustainable plan. This plan includes 11 brand new winter sports venues in two clusters less than forty minutes apart.
The Sochi 2014 presentation was the last the Russian bid will make in front of the IOC members before the final decision to be taken in Guatemala on July 4th 2007.
