TELSTRA LOSES ROUND ONE IN NRL RIGHTS ROW

Australian telecoms company Telstra lost round one of its legal battle to prevent pay-broadcaster Fox Sports from screening rugby league rights on mobile phones and the internet.

Telstra is trying to sue Premier Media Group, owners of Fox Sports, for broadcasting lengthy highlights of NRL matches on its Fox Sports website and mobile phone services owned by Telstra's rivals Vodafone and Hutchison.

But Telstra failed in its bid to get the Federal Court to prevent Fox Sports from broadcasting the highlights before the case goes to a full trial later this year.

Telstra acquired the internet and mobile for NRL matches in a $90 million deal with the NRL.
