FORMER CRICKET CHIEF GIVEN HARD LABOUR

A former chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket has been sentenced to two years hard labour after being convicted of assisting someone to travel on a forged passport.

Thilanga Sumathipala was the governing body’s chairman between 1998-1999 and 2003-2004.

A court heard the offence took place during his time in office when the 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup took place in England.

Deputy solicitor general Yasantha Kodagoda, who lead the prosecution said: “He was convicted of abetting someone to travel using a forged passport overseas.

“He has been sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of 50,000 rupees.”

The fine is approximately $460.
