BEIJING BOSSES REDUCE SECURITY COSTS

Organisers of the Beijing Olympic Games next year say the event will be trouble free – despite spending less on security than previous Games.

Said Liu Shaowu, head of security for the local organising committee: “We will ensure all necessary security arrangements are in place and that the event runs smoothly. However, our costs on such measures will be below that of other countries which have hosted the Olympic Games.”

Details of where the savings will be made have not yet been revealed, although it is understood to be due in part to the provision of surveillance systems and other key equipment by local providers.

Reports suggest security spend could be as little as 20 percent of that deployed for the Athens Games in 2004 – the first to take place since the 2001 September 11 terror attacks on New York.
