BATTLE BETWEEN UK RACECOURSES AND BOOKMAKERS

Leading UK bookmakers have threatened to end their sponsorship of some of horse racing’s major races as part of an ongoing battle over control of live race coverage.

William Hill said it might pull its backing for races such as the William Hill Trophy at the Cheltenham Festival if a group of 30 racecourses pull out of their deal with Satellite Information Services (SIS), a company owned 50 per cent by the country’s bookmakers and which currently has the monopoly on providing live betting-shop pictures from racetracks.

All 30 racecourses involved in satellite racing station Racing UK plus Ascot are planning to break the SIS monopoly and launch their own channel, which will be known as Turf TV, for sale to betting shops.

William Hill said however that it would sponsor 40 races at Arena
Leisure-owned racecourses which are not part of the group.
