The partnership, which will initially run for two years and is worth a significant six figure sum per year, is at the centre of United’s commitment to serving the local communities in which it operates, and will run alongside the Society’s sponsorship of the ‘From Cubs to Lions’ Rugby League Festival for eight to 11 year olds in May.
Bill Hoult, president of United Co-operatives, said, “United Co-operatives has supported rugby league for many years through our sponsorship of both the children’s festival and of various games at leading clubs throughout the season, so this was a logical step-up for us.
“The rugby league clubs – particularly those in the National Leagues – are at the heart of their local communities, and therefore provide a perfect fit with the services we offer throughout the North.”
Richard Lewis, executive chairman of the RFL, added, “we welcome United Co-operatives as our partners and we thank them for their support of the sport’s National Leagues and of the nationwide Rugby League Conference competition which continues to grow.
“We feel there is tremendous synergy between our respective brands and values and we look forward to working with them as the season progresses.”
Lewis added: “This season is of course the first time that the National Leagues will be televised throughout the campaign and we are delighted that the vibrancy and excitement of the sport will reach new audiences throughout the UK.”
