Successful implementation of the project will see a 100 per cent treatment of the solid and biological waste products on the entire territory of the city of Sochi. The project will significantly improve the environmental state of the resort and promote the introduction of modern 'green' technologies across Russia.
The ‘Zero Waste Goal’ project will be implemented and financed as part of the US$12 billion Federal Target Programme for the development of Sochi. It will expand the 'Zero Waste' initiatives outlined in the Sochi 2014 Candidature File. A major goal of the project is to apply these initiatives not only to Olympic venues, but instead to the whole territory of the Sochi region (more than 3,500 sq.km), with project objectives scheduled to be reached before the 2014 Winter Games.
Dmitry Chernyshenko, CEO of the Sochi 2014 Bid Committee, said, “the Sochi region is home to an incredible natural habitat and we are fully committed to not only conserving this natural beauty, but also enhancing it. We want Sochi 2014 to be about our children's future and that is a future in which the environment plays a big part.”
