In an address at yesterday’s Opening Ceremony, Dehring said: “We arrive at this juncture with a feeling of immense pride.
“Pride in our dedicated and hard working staff and Board of Directors at Cricket World Cup who have planned and executed this event;
“Pride in our West Indian governments and our leaders who had the foresight and courage to undertake alongside the West Indies Cricket Board, this historic undertaking;
“Pride in the Local Organising Committees (LOC) of nine sovereign countries who in an unprecedented demonstration of unity and togetherness, came together to forge a single powerful force to get the job done;
“Pride in our magnificent volunteers who will give of themselves over the coming weeks, imparting on all who come into contact the intoxicating spirit and vibes of this wonderful region;
“Pride in our West Indian people who have risen to the occasion; who tolerated the many inconveniences during the construction period; who encouraged and supported us steadfastly; who kept a watchful eye on us to ensure we met their expectations; who kept the faith.
“This is the moment we have been planning for ten years. This is the moment that makes the sweat and tears, the hard work and sacrifice all worth the while.
This is the moment of West Indian achievement.”
