HALIFAX PULLS OUT OF 2014 COMMONWEALTH GAMES BID

The Canadian city of Halifax pulled out of the race to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games after the province of Nova Scotia withdrew support due to concerns over the projected budget.

The move means that Glasgow, UK will take on Abuja in Nigeria in the race. A winner will be announced in November.

A review of the operating and capital costs for the Halifax bid revealed that the Canadian city's budget had reached nearly $1.7bn - almost $1bn more than originally expected.

Consultants analysed the potential legacy of a successful bid, as well as value for money, projected revenue and economic impact.
