TELSTRA SIGNS $70 MILLION RUGBY LEAGUE DEAL

Australian telecoms company Telstra signed a deal with the National Rugby League (NRL) for its naming rights and a package of internet and mobile rights.

Under the deal, worth AU$90 million over six years, Telstra will keep naming rights to the NRL for the next six years as well as having exclusive rights to show footage from games on the internet and mobile phones.

The mobile and internet package was awarded only after the NRL held talks with its broadcast TV partners, Channel Nine and Foxtel, who thought they had acquired internet rights. Under the deal, Nine and Foxtel can show 30 seconds of game footage on their websites.

Telstra also has the online and mobile rights for the Australian Football League (AFL) for five years, which cost AU$60 million, and a six-year deal with the V8 Supercars, which cost AU$20 million.
