US ENTERS RACE FOR 2018 WORLD CUP

The US Soccer Federation has emerged as the shock contender to battle England to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Although the FIFA rotation policy is likely to pencil in Europe for 2018, the potential of the US could weigh heavy on the minds of FIFA chiefs.

USSF president Sunil Gulati also confirmed it would be ready to step in to host the 2014 tournament, should South America not have the infrastructure and facilities FIFA demands for its showcase event.

Gulati said: “We showed in 1994 that the US is capable of hosting a terrific event.

“We would be in position to put on a spectacular event. We are much more a part of the sport internationally than we were in 1994.”

So far England had been seen as the favourites to host the event. The last major soccer event it staged was Euro 96 – the last World Cup in 1966.
